When you dance, you can lose yourself and find yourself all at the same time.
As dance teachers we are facilitators of a space where children can discover themselves, discover their likes and dislikes, discover relationships, connection with others, friendships, and discover who they are and what drives them, we are a part of their journey to finding themselves.
And dance, ok so we realise we are biased, but dance really is one of the best outlets for that discovery - one where you are in touch with your mind and body, it teaches you discipline, hard work practice, but more importantly self care, self awareness and inner strength.
So here's my reasons why I think dance is sort of like therapy...
Dance is a journey
From your first dance class to your first big performance, to the journey of the teacher that guides you and their teacher that led them. I take great joy in passing on the skills and opportunities that were afforded to me by my dance teacher, to my own students. It makes them part of an infinite journey - one that shows how we are all so very connected.
Dance helped me find inner strength
All those hard moments in class, were pivotal moments in my development - teaching me how to connect with my body, to now what it is to try and fail, to know how to learn, dance taught me to be courageous and step outside of my comfort zone.
Dance introduced me to like minded people in a safe space
Going to school can be tough, we have to go and we don't get to choose who we are at school with, but in the dance studio we already have something in common and holding that space of social connectedness for young students is one of the best parts of my job - because I know they are all there because they want to be.
Dance gave me friendships that lasted a lifetime
My dance friends are still my dance friends today - long after we left our studios, some of us have come around again and now share teaching tips and help each other out, we still speak to our old teachers in as much as we hope our students will stay connected to us when they grow up. Dance is like a family, a community, one with strong bonds that mean you will never feel alone.
