'COMPARISON IS THE THIEF OF JOY'

Theodore Roosevelt said it best...

What truly brings you joy? Take a minute to think about it...

For me, it's dancing, it always has been and always will be - but when you dance professionally, in a competitive environment, or even just around your peers - there's always a temptation for us to steal our own fun by comparing what we are doing to those around us.

Dancing aside - that's probably just true to life isn't it? For adults, as well as teenagers and children.

But the trick to loving what you do? Understanding why comparisons never work - and here's why...

  • When we compare ourselves with others, we waste time and energy focusing on what the other person is doing, in stead of focusing on what we are doing ourselves. Once we stop comparing, we give ourselves more time and space to appreciate our own progress, we allow ourselves to celebrate our own victories, giving ourselves the much needed energy to move forward.

  • Once we’ve done this, suddenly, our failures don’t hurt as much - because we are able to look at them for what they really are - in stead of thinking about how much further that put us behind someone else.

  • When we compare our work to someone else’s, all we think about is our own results compared to someone else, which is distracting and can actually lead to even poorer quality work!

  • Positive energy breeds positive energy - focusing on the self, what you do and how you do it, gives you a better understanding of yourself and teaches you to be more compassionate to what others around you are doing. The second you become proud of your own achievements, you create good energy, which in turn will create more good achievements - and you might end up inspiring a lot of people!

  • You can’t be true to yourself when you are comparing yourself to others - it clouds who you really are and hides your own unique talents!

  • Once you free your mind of comparison, the creative juices start flowing - and that’s when the REAL magic happens!
